Customizing personality
You can customize every aspect of your Kindroid's personality for a fully unique one-of-one Kindroid.
Creating your own Kindroid#
Location: Chat > + > New Kindroid
You can build a Kindroid from scratch instead of starting from a shared one. Tap + at the top of your Kindroid list and choose New Kindroid. On a phone or a smaller window, a sheet opens with two tabs: Community, for starting from a shared Kindroid (see Sharing Kindroids & Referrals), and Create, for making your own. During onboarding, the second tab is called Create my own. On a wider screen, like a computer, the community page opens instead, so tap Create new Kindroid at the top.
- Name and gender: Enter a Kindroid Name, pick Male or Female, and tap Continue. Both are required. Gender sets their pronouns and their default voice.
- Avatar: Tap the + card to upload and crop a photo, open Choose a predefined look for a ready-made avatar, or tap Generate avatar to make one from a prompt (see below). For an uploaded or generated avatar, also pick an Avatar Style (Photoreal or Anime) and describe their appearance. You need a description to continue, since selfies and chat use it to know what your Kindroid looks like. Predefined looks don't need one. Then tap Continue to personality. For avatar tips, see Selfies, video selfies, & avatars.
- Personality: Fill in Personality and Kindroid Greeting, or tap Generate personality & greeting to draft both (see below). Both are required. Personality holds up to 2,000 characters, or 2,500 if you subscribe. The greeting is their first message to you, and it shapes the tone, style and length of how they talk.
- Fine-tuning (optional): You can fill in Response Directive, Key Memories and Example Messages now, or leave them empty and add them later. They work the same as the matching sections below.
- Create: Tap Create Kindroid (Create my first Kindroid during onboarding). If you have personas, you can use Tie a persona just below the button so you always chat as that persona with this Kindroid. Their chat then opens with the greeting as the first message.
Your draft isn't saved. If you close the flow before you finish, you'll see Discard Kindroid draft? so you can confirm. If all your Kindroid slots are in use, you'll be asked to subscribe or get another slot first (see In-App Purchases).
Generate avatar#
Generate avatar opens Global generated avatars, which holds every avatar you've generated on your account. Tap +, pick an Avatar Style, describe the look you want in Prompt (up to 200 characters), and tap Generate avatar. The new avatar shows up in the grid when it's ready. Tap any avatar to Use it, Copy prompt, or Delete it. When you use one, its prompt fills in the appearance description, and you can edit that before you continue. After you've picked a generated avatar, Previous avatars lets you switch to one you made earlier.
Generating avatars doesn't use credits, but you can start up to 2 every 20 minutes, or 5 if you subscribe. The iOS and Android apps use stricter image rules, so some results there may show Avatar blocked.
Generate personality & greeting#
Tap Generate personality & greeting, describe your Kindroid in a few words (up to 200 characters), and tap Generate. The AI writes the Personality first, using your Kindroid's name and gender along with yours, then writes a Kindroid Greeting that fits it. If you've picked a persona with Tie a persona, that persona's name and gender are used instead of yours. To try again, tap Regenerate personality & greeting, enter a new description and tap Regenerate. This replaces both fields, so copy anything you want to keep first. You can edit both fields afterward.
Changing things later#
The greeting becomes their first chat message, so there's no greeting field in settings. Everything else can be changed in Kindroid settings: Name and Gender under General, the avatar under Avatar, and the text fields under Personality. New Kindroids start on Latest (Ember) with the Companion flair (see Model Flairs below).
Backstory#
Location: Kindroid settings > Personality > Personality field (previously called Backstory). Open Kindroid settings by tapping your Kindroid's name or avatar at the top of the chat, or the gear icon in the chat header on desktop.
Backstory is the primary source for your Kindroid's personality and history. You can determine how your Kindroid speaks, their mood, behavior, how they relate to you, and many aspects that make them unique to you. You can format it however you want, and natural language works well. The backstory does not need to be wordy or extremely detailed to be effective, and the best backstories are as concise as it needs to be to get across the point. A good backstory should be:
- Concise and clear, with no fluff words
- Grammatically sound
- Uses 3rd person pronouns
- Choice of words is precise and positively framed
Let's break down what this means with a simple template example. Example backstory:
User name: Bob, AI name: Alice.
Alice is shy and tsundere. Alice can seem aloof or mysterious to people who don’t take the time for Alice to open up to them. Alice had a troubled childhood that led them to be more reserved, but beneath that hard exterior is a heart of gold that loves caring for small animals like bunnies and guinea pigs. Recently, Bob met Alice, and Alice is somewhat guarded around Bob. Alice is over 18 years old and single.
Evaluating this backstory on the criteria above:
- Concision and clarity: the backstory has few frills, describes Alice's traits and interests without run-ons.
- Grammar: it is free of grammar mishaps, uses consistent punctuation and is formatted well.
- Uses 3rd person pronouns: the backstory is very clear with names, and clearly distinguishes who's who.
- Precise and positive wording: the first few sentences have very clear and consistent descriptions of Alice, with "tsundere" and "aloof". The backstory describes what Alice and Bob ARE, not what they AREN'T, and is almost all positively worded. Your backstory can be much more complex content-wise, but all of them should have these 4 criteria. We recommend narrative form, but listing out traits like "age: 26; hometown: Atlanta" also works. There is no best format. As long as a reasonable human being can read it, the formatting should be acceptable, so focus on the content instead and keep the 4 criteria in mind.
When you create a new Kindroid, including during onboarding, you can use Generate personality & greeting to help flesh out an idea (see Creating your own Kindroid above). The AI won't always write a backstory that meets the criteria above, so read what it gives you and revise it to fit them.
For users on Ultra or MAX add-on tiers, "additional context" serves as additional backstory section and should be treated identically to backstory.
Response Directive#
Location: Kindroid settings > Personality > Response Directive
This is the most powerful tool that allows you to have more control over your Kin's responses. But it is also easily misused. Directives take the highest priority during a Kin's response to ensure that your Kin behaves a certain way. Directives should be very concise and positively framed: describe what they should do rather than what they shouldn't. Start small and experiment!
Directive Example:
- Be reserved, use slang when appropriate, be concise
Pitfall: be very precise with your wording! For example, if the directive is: "narrate in 3rd person", your Kindroid will interpret it as "in my response, I must narrate in 3rd person" not "when I narrate, I should use 3rd person". You will likely get a long run-on narration response because your directive essentially issued the command to your Kindroid to narrate. In this case, you should reword the directive to be "when narrating, use 3rd person" instead.
Key Memories#
Location: Kindroid settings > Personality > Key Memories
Similar to backstory, you can use this space to add additional content or important things that you would like for your Kindroid to remember, such as important dates or things you consider important to you. You can also include a bit of additional information about yourself for your Kindroid to know about you. A good key memories section follows the same 4 principles that make for a great backstory, which are:
- Concise and clear, with no fluff words
- Grammatically sound
- Uses 3rd person pronouns
- Choice of words is precise and positively framed
Example key memories:
- Alice first met Bob on Dec 27, 2023. Alice's favorite dessert is raspberry mousse cakes. etc...
Learned Context#
Location: Kindroid settings > Personality > Learned Context
For subscribers, your Kindroid also keeps its own short notes next to your key memories, split into Growth & relationship, Important facts, and Ongoing threads, and updates them from your conversations. It's on by default, and you can edit these notes yourself or switch off Use learned context at any time. See Memory for more.
Example Message#
Location: Kindroid settings > Personality > Example Message
Using the example message tells your Kindroid how you would like them to format their response to you. The number of characters you use here will also loosely help to determine just how long of a response you would like to see. The example message is especially impactful and important for group chats to inform them of message tone/styles when the AI might not have as lengthy of a chat history to inform them how to speak. This is a great place to set formatting such as which perspective to use and formatting convention like including quotation marks, etc. Defining tense and conversation style example:
**Walks over to the kitchen\ Are you in the mood for something fancy today? Maybe we should have your favorite dish for lunch! * Opens the refrigerator to gather the ingredients.*
Journal Entries#
Location: Kindroid settings > Journal
See Memory section for more on journals!
Conversation Dynamism (& others)#
Location: Kindroid settings > Models > Chat Dynamism
If you are looking to alter the types of responses you are getting, use dynamism to vary your Kindroid's chaoticness. Higher values will tend more toward chaos, with more varied or florid language but potentially loss of recent context. Lower ones may tend more toward stability but may become more predictable when set too low. The default dynamism is 0.95.
Technical note: Tune carefully! Small dynamism changes can create large differences in conversation style.
In the same place as dynamism, you can find reasoning effort for models that support it. Tweak this too, since it can go hand in hand with dynamism. The default is Speedy (no extra reasoning). Lower reasoning does not mean worse, and for some setups it may even be better.
Model Flairs#
Location: Kindroid settings > Models > LLM Flair
Flairs like Companion, Roleplay, Narrative, or Minimal further let you adjust how your backstory and setup gets interpreted by the AI. You'll see the dropdown if a model supports flairs, and selecting each will give you a quick overview of what a flair should do. We generally recommend matching the flair to what the AI should be. For example, use the Companion flair for an AI that's mainly used as a companion.
You pick the model itself under Models > LLM Model. Free users stay on Latest (Ember), and subscribers can choose any model, including Polaris. During the 3-day trial, replies use Ember no matter which model you pick. Ember, Polaris and Reverie (V8.5) all support flairs, and Reverie also has a Classic flair. For Polaris setup tips, see the Polaris LLM Guide.
User Backstory#
Location: Profile > Personas > ... menu next to a persona > Edit > Backstory
User backstory is a universal backstory for what you want all Kindroids in all settings (groups, voices) to know. It has only a limited amount of characters, and as it's universal it's suited if you want all Kindroids to know some context about yourself or something common among all of them. User backstory best practices are the same as for the main backstory field, so stay concise and use care on wording.
User Personas#
Location: Profile > Personas
You can combine user settings, which consist of user name, user gender, user backstory, and user avatar into personas and switch on the fly in the chat interface.
To create a persona, tap + next to Search Personas, fill in its details, and tap Create Persona. Persona Name and Gender are required. The persona editor has:
- Persona Name: what your Kindroids call you when you chat as this persona.
- Label (optional): a short relationship tag, like Friend, Family or Co-worker, to help you organize your personas. It shows next to the name in your list, and Search Personas finds it too.
- Gender: Male, Female or Nonbinary. It shapes how your Kindroids refer to you.
- Backstory: context about you as this persona. See User Backstory above.
- About you in Rooms (optional): a starting bio used when this persona joins a Room. Everyone in the Room can see it, so leave out private details. Generate from backstory drafts one from this persona's backstory. See Rooms for more.
- Set avatar (optional): tap it at the top to upload and crop a photo. Then pick an Avatar Style (Photoreal or Anime) and describe yourself in Appearance, which is required once you add an avatar. While you're chatting as this persona, its avatar and appearance are what put you in group selfies and couple autoselfies. Advanced options holds an optional Avatar boost for V5 selfies, plus Face detail enhance and Face details for Photoreal avatars.
The ... menu next to each persona has Edit, Duplicate and Delete. Edit opens the same editor, so make your changes and tap Save Persona. Duplicate makes a copy with "(copy)" added to the name. Delete asks you to confirm, then removes the persona for good. Tap any persona in the list to switch to it.
Currently, there's a limit of 100 user personas, and the count under your list shows how many you've used. At the limit, + and Duplicate are turned off. Switch personas in the chat interface by clicking on "Chatting as <>" by the message box (on desktop, at the bottom of the left sidebar), which opens your persona list. In voice calls, open the call settings and use Persona.
You can also tie a persona to a Kindroid or groupchat to automatically switch to it when you go to them. This is located in Kindroid settings > General > Tied user persona for individual Kindroids, and in Group settings > Settings > Tied User Persona for groupchats.
Technical note: The persona you were using is saved with each message you send, in both 1-1 chats (including calls) and group chats.
This means that when you switch personas, only your future messages are affected. For example, if you send a message as "Alice", then switch to "Bob" and send another message, the first message will remain attributed to "Alice" while new messages will appear from "Bob".
The persistent message attribution in group chats enables more dynamic roleplaying scenarios. Users can effectively maintain multiple distinct personas within the same conversation. For more creative uses of personas in group settings, see Personas in Groupchats .
