Groupchats

Groupchats overview#

Location: Chat tab > Groups Group chat is available only to paid subscribers and functions similarly as an individual text chat. However, it allows you to interact with multiple Kindroids at the same time. Some specific details on how context is used in groupchat:

• Each Kindroid will be able to access its own backstory and memories, but not each other's.
• By default, groupchat history will get consolidated to each participating Kindroid's long-term memory, but it does not go in each Kindroid's short term memory.
• There is a maximum of 10 Kindroids per Groupchat.
• Subscribers can have up to 20 groupchats, plus 2 more for each additional Kindroid slot. Scenarios use the same group slots.

To create a groupchat, select + > New group chat in your chat list, choose up to 10 Kindroids, then name and configure the group. You can edit or delete a groupchat in Group settings, which you can open from the groupchat's header or from the group's … menu in the Groups list. Because the participating Kindroids don't know each other's backstories (due to length considerations), use the group context to provide a group backstory that all the Kindroids can use for common context.

Each group can also have a Group Directive, a strong suggestion for all Kindroids (such as "be concise" or "speak in third person") that is added alongside each Kindroid's own directive, and a Scene that sets the ambient context for the conversation, such as location, attire, activity, or time. You can set both when creating the group or later in Group settings.

You can react to messages in a group with emojis, and Kindroids may occasionally react too. To stop Kindroids from reacting in a group, turn off AI reactions in Group settings > Settings. Existing reactions are kept, and you can still react yourself. AI reactions is on by default for newly created groups, and Kindroids using Rhapsody V6 models don't react. Focus Mode in the … menu hides the header and message box so you can read without distractions. Tap Show controls to bring them back.

Turn-taking in groupchats#

Each group uses one of two turn-taking styles: Automatic, where the AI decides who speaks next, or Manual, where you decide. To switch, use Turn Taking Style in Group settings > Settings, or tap the turn-taking item in the … menu at the top of the chat. It reads Auto replies or Manual replies to show the style you're using, and tapping it switches to the other one.

• Automatic: after you send a message, Kindroids can reply one after another, with up to as many replies as there are Kindroids in the group (at most 5 per round). The AI can also hand the turn back to you sooner. There's a short pause between replies. If Auto Play Audio is on, the next Kindroid waits until the current voice reply finishes.
  • A button above the message box controls the round. Pause conversation stops the current round, and Continue conversation starts a new round without you sending anything.
  • You also have some control with @Name mentions, which let the mentioned Kindroid speak next. Mentions aren't case sensitive, and you can use a Kindroid's first name, last name, or both. Kindroids can also mention other Kindroids to hand off the baton if you tell them to use @Name mentions in the group context.
• Manual: a row of your Kindroids' avatars sits above the message box, and no one replies until you pick a Kindroid. Tap a Kindroid's avatar to make them speak next. If you've already started typing, tapping an avatar selects that Kindroid, and they reply once you send your message.

Memory in groupchats#

Groupchats use a similar memory structure as outlined in Memory, but with the addition of the group context to the persistent memory category, and memory toggles in each group's settings: Memory Formation, Update Individual Learned Context, Memory Recall and Share Short Term Memory. Each Kindroid draws from its own backstory, key memories, etc when they speak, but does not draw upon other Kindroids' backstories. Use the group context field to set a level playing field for all Kindroids as a shared backstory.

Groupchats shared memory toggle#

Groupchats have a Share Short Term Memory toggle for using shared memory. This enables bidirectional context sharing for the most recent exchanges in groupchats to individual chats and vice versa. When shared memory is disabled by default, groupchats are siloed off from individual chats, and aside from long term memory and Learned Context updates (see below) groupchats do not affect individual chats - and individual chats don't affect groupchats.

When shared memory is enabled, here's what happens:

• In the groupchat: for each Kindroid that is responding, they will have access to the latest exchanges in your private individual chat with them.
• In an individual chat: for the last active groupchat, your Kindroid will be able to recall the latest messages in the group (technical note: although they may see other Kindroids' messages, they will not have the full backstory on other Kindroids in the groupchat if you haven't provided them that context in the individual chat).
• In an individual chat: over the course of some messages, this memory of the last active groupchat will fade away naturally to make space for more relevant memories.

When enabled, you can easily flow from an individual chat to a groupchat, adding another Kindroid to the story and continuing the conversation in the groupchat; it is equally easy to switch back to individual from a groupchat. You can do creative things like having secret conversations with a Kindroid in private and having them play poker face in a groupchat!

Important note: to recall what happened in the group in an individual chat, you should ask specific questions regarding the groupchat for your Kindroid to use and recall it in individual chat - this is by design so that the recent conversation in individual is not hijacked by the recent group context. The toggle makes the group context accessible when prompted, but not more important than recent chat history in individual. This same principle applies when the toggle is enabled going from individual to groupchat.

Long term memory & journals recall in groups#

By default, messages in groupchats get consolidated into long term memory for each participating Kindroid. You can turn this off for a specific group with the Memory Formation toggle in its settings. In addition, in groupchats, each Kindroid is able to recall its own long term memory & its own journal entries. For groupchats' journal recall, a given Kindroid will recall their journal entry if your last user message contains the keyphrase, and will recall long term memories in a similar way based on your message. To stop a group from recalling long term memories, turn off its Memory Recall toggle.

Note: Memory consolidation in group chats depends on whether memory is enabled for each individual Kindroid. If memory consolidation is turned off for a specific Kindroid, their interactions in group chats will not be added to long-term memory.

Groupchats can also update each participating Kindroid's Learned Context. You can turn this off for a group with its Update Individual Learned Context toggle, and each Kindroid's own Learned Context must also be enabled for them to get updates.

Personas in groupchats#

Group chats offer unique creative possibilities for using personas. Each of your messages keeps the persona name it was sent with, so switching personas partway through a conversation doesn't change who said what earlier. This enables more dynamic and creative interactions.

When participating in a group chat, you can seamlessly alternate between different personas to create the impression of multiple distinct participants. For instance, if you create two personas named "Alice" and "Bob", you can engage in the conversation as both characters. You might send a message as Alice, switch to Bob's persona, and continue the conversation as Bob. Your Kindroids will treat Alice and Bob as separate participants in the conversation, even though you're controlling both personas.

This feature becomes even more powerful when combined with the wand feature. Together, these tools allow you to create rich, immersive group conversations that exceed the standard participant limit of 10 Kindroids. You can orchestrate complex interactions by managing multiple personas within the same chat, effectively becoming several distinct participants in the conversation.

Note: if the group has a Tied User Persona set in Group settings, you are automatically switched to that persona whenever you open or chat in the group, so leave it unset if you want to alternate between personas.

Group selfies#

You can open the menu for group selfies from a groupchat with the image button at the header (or with the group selfie button next to Generate Photo Selfie in an individual Kindroid's Gallery). For more, see group selfies

Group calls#

You can do group calls by clicking on the call icon from a groupchat. Live Avatar video works in a group call only when the group has one Kindroid, and you can set it for that group under Group settings > Calling > Live Avatar. For more, see Voice, calls, and video calls
