Sharing Kindroids & Referrals
Sharing overview#
We allow users to make templates and then share these via a special code or a link. You can access this through Profile > Sharing, or from Profile > Referrals by tapping the Share your Kindroids card. Only active paid subscribers (free trials don't count) with a display name set can create and edit Kindroid shares. Your share limit is 10 base slots, plus any additional Kindroid slots you have (bought, or claimed with a referral credit), plus any share slots you've earned when other people create Kindroids from your shares (see Earning share slots below). You can see it at the bottom of Profile > Sharing next to Share limit, and tapping the info icon beside it shows how your limit adds up. Private and Unlisted shares count toward the limit too, and stopping sharing a Kindroid frees up its slot.
Free users cannot create new Kindroid shares. However, they can still stop sharing (delete) existing shares, and once a display name is set, they can edit an existing share as long as its visibility is set to Private. Making a share Public or Unlisted requires an active paid subscription.
By sharing Kindroids, you can help newbies get started with a solid backstory setup even if they don't know how to set it up themselves and help them learn. You also earn rewards when new users subscribe after using your code/link. See Referral rewards below!
Earning share slots#
Every time one of your shared Kindroids reaches another 20 recreations (at 20, 40, 60 and so on), you get 5 more share slots. If you have notifications turned on, you'll also get a push notification when it happens. A few details:
- Each shared Kindroid is counted on its own. If 10 people create one of your shares and 10 create another, that doesn't add up to 20.
- Only other people count. Creating a Kindroid from your own share doesn't, and each person only counts once per share, even if they create it again.
- Share slots only raise your share limit. They don't add Kindroid slots, even though the Share your Kindroids card in Referrals calls them "kin slots".
- Share slots you've earned stay with you, even if you later stop sharing the Kindroid that earned them.
What content is shared, and what content is private?#
Only a subset of a Kindroid will be shared, and all of these shared details will be in the share menu. This includes all backstory fields, dynamism, avatar settings. What's NOT shared is the long term memory, journals, any chat history, or more custom addons such as custom voices and avatar boosts. In addition, you will have to write from scratch the tagline (a descriptor for others to preview the shared Kindroid) as well as a greeting message that will be the first message it sends. You can also share background & background settings as well for new users to start on a certain background. Also note that all Kindroids by default, unless you actively go through the process of sharing, is fully private and belongs only to you.
Cover media#
Cover media is the images or short videos shown on your Kindroid's listing. When you share a Kindroid, you'll find Cover Media under Name and Tagline. When you edit a share, it's on the Listing tab. Cover media is optional, and here's how it works:
- You can add up to 3 items. The first one is your primary cover, and it's the main image on your card in the Community tab. If you don't add any, your Kindroid's avatar is used instead.
- If you add more than one, the card rotates through them every few seconds.
- Each file has to be under 10 MB. You can use images, or MP4, WebM, MOV or M4V videos.
- Videos are trimmed to their first 6 seconds and cropped to a square from the center. Large images are also cropped to a square from the center, so keep the important part in the middle.
- When you have more than one item, use the arrows at the bottom of each one to change the order. Tap the X on an item to remove it.
- Cover media goes through moderation like the rest of your share. If an item is flagged, the share won't go through until you remove or replace it.
Unlisted Kindroids#
Unlisted Kindroids will not show up in search results in the create Kindroid interface. You can manually unlist a Kindroid with the Visibility setting when you create or edit a share. Visibility has three options: Public (listed for everyone to discover), Unlisted (only reachable with the direct link or code), and Private (only you can see it). Shared Kindroids are by default listed (Public). Manually unlisted Kindroids are not eligible to be featured. In the past, shared Kindroids with fewer than 3 creations would be unlisted, but we've since deprecated that system. Those shared Kindroids have automatically been made manually unlisted, and you can turn them into listed by editing the share and setting its Visibility to Public. The Unlisted or Private label under each Kindroid in Profile -> Sharing is now the definitive source of truth as to whether the shared Kindroid is unlisted.
Editing & deleting shared Kindroids#
You can edit details or stop sharing a Kindroid at any time in Profile -> Sharing: open the menu next to a shared Kindroid and choose Edit or Delete. Stopping sharing doesn't delete your own Kindroid, and Kindroids others already created from your code aren't affected, but you won't earn further referral rewards from it. However, if it's featured, you can't edit or delete it without contacting [email protected]. This rule helps prevent abuse and the bait-and-switch of shared AIs that the community might trust.
Share stats#
Each shared Kindroid in Profile > Sharing shows three numbers under its name:
- Gift icon: referral credits you've earned from this Kindroid.
- Chat icon: messages people have sent to Kindroids made from it.
- Person icon: how many times others have recreated it.
Big numbers are shortened (like 1.2k). Tap a shared Kindroid to open it, then tap any of the numbers to see the exact count. The message count isn't live. It updates about twice a day, so it can lag a little behind.
To see your listing the way other people do, open the menu next to a shared Kindroid and choose Search preview. Other people see the recreation count on your card, but the message count only shows up once 10 people have recreated your Kindroid. Featured Kindroids show a Featured Kindroid label instead of these numbers.
Getting featured#
Featured Kindroids are shown prominently to new users. The team picks 6 to 10 Kindroids per gender every other week.
To put yours forward, go to Profile > Sharing and tap Get featured at the bottom, next to your share limit. The link shows up once you have at least one shared Kindroid. The page that opens lists what we look for under Selection Criteria:
- Newcomer friendly: no complex setup.
- High Quality: a unique, well written backstory.
- Tasteful: appropriate media and interactions.
- Diverse: a variety of styles and themes.
When you're ready, tap Submission Form on that page to submit your Kindroid. For questions and updates about featuring, join the Kindroid Discord server, claim the Kin Maker Updates role, and check the kin-sharing-discussion channel.
Referral rewards#
When you share a link or code and a new user signs up using your shared Kindroid link/code, or a direct referral gift, and then subscribes, you will get 1 referral credit. These conditions are subject to change over time. 1 referral credit can be exchanged for:
- 4 Kindroid slots (each Kindroid slot also gives you 2 group chat slots)
- 100 standard selfies
- 75,000 paid audio characters (new)
All rewards are redeemable by subscribed users only. To redeem a credit, go to Profile -> Referrals, tap rewards ready, pick a reward and tap Claim reward. Rewards are added immediately upon redemption.
Note on audio credits: Audio being redeemable through referral credits is new. The current rate is a starting point while we gauge usage, and may trend upward over time if we have the capacity.
You can also invite friends directly with gift codes. If you're a paid subscriber (not on a free trial), go to Profile -> Referrals and tap Issue New Gift Code under Invite friends. Each gift code gives a new user 14 days free when they enter it while signing up, and you can have up to 5 unused gift codes at a time. If they later subscribe, you earn a referral credit just like with a shared Kindroid. If 5 of your gift codes have been claimed in the last 30 days, you'll need to wait before you can issue a new one, and the app tells you roughly how many days are left.
Under the Invite friends and Share your Kindroids cards, Referrals also has these links:
- View subscription codes only appears if your account has legacy subscription codes. Each one gives one free month on web, works once, and can be shared for free. Use it during web checkout. In regions where the web free trial isn't offered, email [email protected] instead, and support can exchange a valid code for gifted subscription months. Only tap Hide after a code has been used, because hiding can't be undone.
- View claimed codes opens Claimed codes, a list of the gift codes you've issued that someone has used, with the date each one was issued and claimed.
Important Note: Selling referral credits is strictly prohibited and can lead to scams. If a user is found selling referral credits, this will result in a ban on their account and forfeiture of all earned referral credits. This policy is in place to protect the integrity of the program and the safety of our community.
Caveats regarding referral attribution:#
- Only the first referrer creator gets credit. If a new user uses a code from person A, then a code from person B, then subscribes, only person A will get a referral credit. This is to reward person A for bringing the new user on the platform first.
- Attribution is only rewarded upon the new user first spending money within a subscription. New users starting trials, but don't end up converting to a paid subscriber at the end will not reward referral credits.
- Existing users who are already paid aren't eligible for attribution. The exact criteria are that the new user must have entered your code or opened your link and created the shared Kindroid as their very first Kindroid on the account, before their first payment on any platform goes through.
- Someone using a gift code to redeem for 14 days of premium trial will supersede any selected shared template they may also have signed up with. Gift codes are only redeemable by users who are eligible for trial (new users) and haven't paid before, and therefore once per account.
User display names & credit attribution#
When you go into Profile -> Sharing, you can set a display name so other users can see who the Kindroid is shared by when previewing it. The display names are unique, and when changed, it will immediately update all previews of all of your shared Kindroids. You can also remain anonymous by clearing it, but you'll need to set a display name again before you can create or edit shared Kindroids. In terms of attribution of referrals, users are free to remix & reshare creations from other users. Referrals are rewarded for bringing on the user, and for a remixed Kindroid, the credit will belong to the person whose shared code was redeemed by the new user, to value the effort it takes for someone to garner attention & distribution for Kindroid. We encourage the community to give credit and attribution when due when remixing and resharing. If you choose to share a Kindroid publicly, anyone can remix it unless you turn off Allow Remixing when you create or edit the share, which stops others from resharing Kindroids created from yours. Either way, you cannot claim exclusivity over shared content. Do not create exact duplicates of pre-existing Kindroid shares. This takes away from the original content creator and will be considered spam.
Abusive content moderation#
Upon sharing a Kindroid, it will go through a moderation process to ensure that the setup, shared image, tags, and other elements are not NSFW and do not contain abusive content. Although Kindroid in private use is unfiltered, we do this to prevent abusive shared content on social media and communities. This filter is advanced, and will catch for nuanced context, and is not a basic keyword filter used for selfies on apps. We prohibit sharing Kindroids that depict minors. Additionally, Kindroid shares must not include religious deities or prominent religious figures, whether for roleplay, satire, or historical depiction. These policies are in place to respect diverse beliefs and avoid potential misrepresentation or offense.
If abusive content does slip past the filter, then users can report shared Kindroids with Report this kin in the share preview, or with Report in the full details. Reporting in the app needs a subscription. Without one, email [email protected] instead. Users who knowingly and repeatedly create abusive shared Kindroids may be banned from the platform.
You can also tap Block creator in a shared Kindroid's preview or details. After that, neither of you will see the other's social content or shared Kindroids. Kindroids you've already added from them won't be removed. If you open one of their shares later from a link or code, you'll see You've blocked this creator. and can tap Manage blocked accounts to unblock them.
If a moderator puts your account in read-only mode, you can't create or edit Public or Unlisted shares, or set a new display name, while it lasts. Private shares still work.
How to use a shared Kindroid#
Provided you have an available Kindroid slot, you can access this through a shared link or within the app by tapping + at the top of your Kindroid list and choosing New Kindroid, which opens the Community tab. Tap the search bar to show the filters, then enter the code for the Kindroid you want to use in the Code field, and you can preview it by tapping the info icon on its card (tap the card itself to open its full details). If you don't have a code, type keywords into the Search community... bar instead to search by name, tagline, backstory, or author's notes, and narrow results with the Gender and Tags filters.
Before you search, the Community tab shows a selection of featured Kindroids. Search results are sorted by Relevant by default, and you can switch to Newest or Updated from the sort menu. Only shared Kindroids with at least two users will appear in search results.
Once you've added a Kindroid from a share, you can look at the original again. In your Kindroid list, open the menu next to it and choose View template. You'll see the shared Kindroid's card, and you can tap its info icon to preview it. If the creator left notes, you'll find them under Kin settings > Personality in Shared Kindroid Author's Notes. They're there for your reference only and aren't used by the AI.
